This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to complete rescues in natural open-water swimming and recreation environments. It requires the ability to assess open-water rescue situations, identify hazards, determine appropriate rescue actions, and use a range of equipment and techniques to provide prompt and effective rescue responses.
Learning Outcomes
This unit applies to sport, aquatic, outdoor recreation and community organisations that supervise or conduct activities in natural open-water environments, including commercial, not-for-profit, community and government organisations.
It applies to workers who may be required to complete open-water rescues, including open-water lifeguards, outdoor recreation leaders, aquatic activity leaders and others responsible for supervising participants in lakes, dams, lagoons, slow-moving rivers and non-surf beaches. Rescuers use discretion and judgement to manage changing conditions and problems as they arise, guided by established organisational rescue and emergency procedures.
